Monthly options expire on the third Friday of every month — the "monthly OPEX". Most highly liquid tickers (SPY, QQQ, and large caps) also list weekly options that expire every Friday. When the third Friday falls on a market holiday such as Good Friday, expiration moves to the preceding Thursday.
Four times a year — the third Friday of March, June, September and December — stock-index futures, stock-index options and single-stock options all expire on the same day. This "triple witching" often brings a spike in trading volume and can amplify intraday volatility as large positions are rolled or closed.
Max pain is the strike where the most options — calls and puts combined — would expire worthless, inflicting the maximum loss on option buyers. As expiration nears, price sometimes drifts toward the max pain strike (the "pin"). The board above shows how far each ticker's spot price sits from its max pain strike; names pinned closest are listed first.
